
But maybe not for long. The monitor/speaker situation could be taken care of with an eyepiece and earbud (these already exist and are used for specialized applications) and a projection mode for sharing with others or when you are alone. We already have what we need, then, for monitor replacement. The keyboard and mouse could be replaced with words, and even with silent subvocalization with just a tiny implant. Add wireless technology to these, and you're home free.
But why stop there? We are making great strides in mapping the brain, and it may not be long before we are able to tap directly into the human nervous system. Done properly, all of our input and output could be done wirelessly and directly between our computer and our brains. Of course, that adds a whole new meaning to the term “virus protection.”
