Input and Output Tomorrow Style
We are almost at the point where we can take our business (and personal) computers  everywhere, from a hardware standpoint. Even with existing chipsets, we are nearly at the point of being truly portable. With already-announced improvements in chip size, density, and power consumption, we are nearly ready to do serious computing on something as small as a very small cell phone. Amazing stuff.

future.jpegBut we are still stuck with a few bulky computer parts: keyboard, mouse, and monitor. If we can do without these, and store our applications and data on the Web, we're home free. But those bulky input / output parts are so far cramping our style. Your computer could be the size of a deck of cards, but getting information into and out of it requires some large pieces of hardware.

But maybe not for long. The monitor/speaker situation could be taken care of with an eyepiece and earbud (these already exist and are used for specialized applications) and a projection mode for sharing with others or when you are alone. We already have what we need, then, for monitor replacement. The keyboard and mouse could be replaced with words, and even with silent subvocalization with just a tiny implant. Add wireless technology to these, and you're home free.

But why stop there? We are making great strides in mapping the brain, and it may not be long before we are able to tap directly into the human nervous system. Done properly, all of our input and output could be done wirelessly and directly between our computer and our brains. Of course, that adds a whole new meaning to the term “virus protection.”
