I feel that I have to share part of the contents of a newsletter that I received this morning from Projity, the makers of the Open Source replacement for Microsoft Project. It was Projity that gave the the determination to finally get the heck off Windows. I have been a software development project manager for a long time, mainly as a consultant, where Project is the default program.
One day about a year ago, my totally legal copy of MS Project refused to open a file a friend had sent to me for advice. I went to get the minor upgrade that my version needed. It would not install. My friend needed help badly. To make a long story short, Microsoft refused to help. In a flurry of searching, I found OpenProj, installed it, and solved my friends problem. Is it as good as MS Project. No, it's much better! It actually works! And the makers of OpenProj are helpful, if you need them, as opposed to the ridiculous pompous buffoons at Microsoft.
Other people have noticed that, as well. Projity has just announced that they have now served 500,000 downloads of OpenProj. Given that OpenProj does everything MS Project does (without the weird hiccups the the Micorsoft product is prone to) and even more, I can assure you that there are a lot of very happy OpenProj users out there.
If you are an MS Project user, or if you have wanted to be but couldn't afford the exorbitant prices that Microsoft charges, get the heck to the
Projity Website and download OpenProj. It is free. Use it for a week or two. Convince yourself that it works, just as I did. Then send Projity a donation to make sure that this incredible Open Source project continues.
