Microsoft Integrity, Where For Art Thou
I am not sure that Microsoft is even in a small crowd on this issue, but they do appear to be the poster child for questionable corporate ethics. If I had my choice between taking the word of Dubya on weapons of mass destruction or Microsoft on monopolistic practices, I would have to listen to Dubya first.

dustbin.jpegEvery utterance of Microsoft from brute force marketing practices to the performance of new operating systems seems concerned with legal maneuvering and covering up their problems, rather than with giving any consideration whatsoever to their clients. Their stance seems to be that they will do whatever they want, regardless of the truth or client need, and the only side that matters is their own.

A lot of corporations seem to act in the same way, especially since the laws have all been stacked in their favor. But the case of Microsoft is especially irksome to me. I was around when they almost singlehandedly made it possible for microcomputers to play a large part in the lives of us all by making our files interchangeable. I was in their corner for many years afterward, even as it was becoming obvious that the company had changed from innovator to spin-meister.

This is a company that has cashed our checks too many times. They are old and stodgy, their code is old and stodgy, and their ethics are darker than dark gray. It takes people a while to catch on, but eventually, if something better is allowed to come along, Microsoft is going to be relegated to the dustbin of history and no one will remember the years of greatness and invention.

What a sad way to waste all of that promise.
