Although it is too late to be one of the first 10,000 to play, it is hard to think of that number as very exclusive a group. It is a bit like being one the first million to view a Web page, or one of the first 37 billion to park in a Manhattan parking spot. The language being used is certainly ready for prime time; it’s Python. Judging by the functionality of the extant apps, though, it is hard to believe that the API itself is yet worth the risk of being trampled by the other 9,999 waiting outside the door on opening day.
Perhaps this is a way of improving that API, and especially the library that goes with it. Functionality in a large system comes with the honing of software services and the proliferation of useful API calls. Rather than spend their own time and money doing improving the API, it would appear that Google would prefer to let loose a random 10,000 Python coders on the problem. My thirty-five years of software development experience tells me that their choice is not a good one, but only time will tell.
