Open Office is more than an alternative. It is a replacement, purely and simply. I am sure that there are esoteric things that MS Office will do that Open Office will not. I am equally sure that those things are not very important to business word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, or local databases. When all is said and done, Open Office is a more complete package, leaner, more robust, and better-behaved. The package consists of the following components, with the use for each shown:- Writer, word processing.
- Calc, spreadsheets
- Impress, a presentation program
- Draw, a complete drawing program
- Base, a tool for local databases
- Math, equation and formula tool
Assuming that you are using an open source browser, like Firefox and an open source email client like Thunderbird, Open Office will complete your basic business desktop needs. Add the specialized tools for your business and job, and you are good to go. All of the Open Office apps can use and produce Microsoft-compatible files wherever possible. The open source office suite comes in flavors for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Sun Solaris and FreeBSD.
