Open Office – Open Source Personified
We have been writing a bit about Open Source lately (here, here, and here). We have talked about how unlikely it is that Microsoft will ever get it, and we have briefly mentioned an example or two. It is about time that we took a better look at an example that could be of great benefit to businesses everywhere. It is a no-cost alternative to a high-cost Microsoft product. It is called Open Office, and it is an open-source alternative to Microsoft Office.

openoffice.jpgOpen Office is more than an alternative. It is a replacement, purely and simply. I am sure that there are esoteric things that MS Office will do that Open Office will not. I am equally sure that those things are not very important to business word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, or local databases. When all is said and done, Open Office is a more complete package, leaner, more robust, and better-behaved. The package consists of the following components, with the use for each shown:

  1. Writer, word processing.
  2. Calc, spreadsheets
  3. Impress, a presentation program
  4. Draw, a complete drawing program
  5. Base, a tool for local databases
  6. Math, equation and formula tool

Assuming that you are using an open source browser, like Firefox and an open source email client like Thunderbird, Open Office will complete your basic business desktop needs. Add the specialized tools for your business and job, and you are good to go. All of the Open Office apps can use and produce Microsoft-compatible files wherever possible. The open source office suite comes in flavors for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Sun Solaris and FreeBSD.

We’ll talk a little about some of the individual applications over the next few days.
